The Enduring Spirit of Vanderbilt's School of Engineering
Photos by Helen Burrus
How many engineers does it take to play pranks at surveying camp? Quite a few, if
stories from the 1998 Engineering Alumni Luncheon are true.
Classes ending in 3 and 8, as well as
alumni from other classes, were invited to reconnect at the May 22 luncheon and
reminisce about their days at the School of Engineering. Prizes were awarded to
alums for such distinctions as having the longest Vanderbilt/School of
Engineering family tradition and being the oldest alum present. The memory- and
merry-making was recorded as part of a "scrapbook" of living history the School
is assembling for all to enjoy.
Later in the day, Ephrahim Garcia, associate professor, told alumni
about his and Michael Goldfarb's research on robotic insects as part of the
Reunion Weekend educational program.

Howell Adams, '53, son of a Vanderbilt engineer and father of two Vanderbilt
engineers, recalled a field trip with Professor Bill Rowan, advisor to the
Vanderbilt chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. "We decided to
visit Rock Island to investigate the dam and lake. There were a lot of
construction issues in building the dam. Several of us rode in Professor Rowan's
car. We had a nice place to stay and arranged to have some ski boats. When it was
time to go home, Professor Rowan suddenly realized we hadn't been anywhere near
the dam. We got into his car and drove close to the dam. Professor Rowan said,
'Ok boys, look out the right window. There's the dam,' and we kept right on
trucking back to Nashville."
