spacer ECE and CS Departments Merge

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science have merged to form the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
All degree programs remain intact. Students have the option of earning a bachelor of engineering in electrical engineering or computer engineering, or a bachelor of science in computer science. Graduate programs in electrical engineering and computer science remain the same, and Arts and Science students are still able to earn a second major in computer science.
The merger capitalizes on synergies between ECE and CS and strengthens already strong collaborations in teaching and research between the two areas, says Professor Art Brodersen, chair of the new department.
The alignment better positions the School of Engineering to meet the needs of students in computing disciplines, Dean Ken Galloway adds.
"Information technology is defined as the use of computer hardware and software to facilitate the use and dissemination of information and knowledge in business, industry, and education," he says. "Vanderbilt University, and particularly the School of Engineering, must be positioned to be a leader in information technology if we are to realize our ambitions for a School of Engineering of national prominence."
