I am honored to be the new president of the Vanderbilt Engineering Alumni Council. The Council's role, as I see it, is to help improve the visibility, reputation, and performance of the Vanderbilt School of Engineering and to be a sounding board for concerns and questions of alumni.
EAC members are organized into several committees, which examine and recommend action on items we believe helpful to the School of Engineering. We meet biannually with Dean Galloway to receive reports from him and other key faculty members, and in turn report on our various committee meetings and activities.
The committees have ongoing projects in four key areas.
The Corporate Relations Committee chaired by Steve Lainhart, '74, in cooperation with the University's Career Center, has successfully placed interns in meaningful summer jobs. In addition to providing valuable experience for students, the program acquaints employers with the School of Engineering as a source of future employees, a potential partner for research awards and engineering projects, and an educational institution worthy of financial support. Alumni, please send comments and recommendations to Steve.Lainhart@ThompsonPower.com.
The Student Recruitment Committee, headed by Elizabeth DeBusk, '89, and Joseph Flowers, '88, is working to increase VUSE's visibility among high school math and science teachers, guidance counselors, and prospective engineering students and parents. Their efforts include mailings, science fairs, college fairs, personal contacts, work with area Alumni Recruitment Committees, and a proposed CD-rom on Engineering School programs. Communicate with Elizabeth or Joseph at edebusk@deroyal.com or jflowers1@slb.com.
The Lewis Society and Annual Fund Committee, chaired by Jim Johnson, '63, PhD'72 is working to increase the participation of engineering alumni who contribute annually to the School. Those alumni who give at the $1,000 level become members of the Fred J. Lewis Society, established to honor Fred Lewis, who served as dean of the School from 1933 to 1959. Both the Lewis Society and the Annual Fund raise unrestricted funds, which are used to increase scholarships and financial aid, to recruit and retain top-notch faculty, and to enhance our teaching and research programs. Contact Jim Johnson at james.johnson@halliburton.com.
The Marketing and Outreach Committee chaired by me works with all other committees to promote these various efforts both inside and outside Vanderbilt. We particularly want to develop an interest in the School of Engineering among alumni, our peer universities, and the corporate world. As interest and awareness of VUSE grows, the resulting reputation will bring increasing numbers of superior students to our School. Contact me with comments or information at lizbobb@HIWAAY.net.
There is an ongoing need to inform alumni of the instructional and research programs at the School of Engineering. This publication, Engineering News, sent to all alumni, is one method. Another is the Engineering Research Report, published annually, outlining many of the cutting edge projects underway. Contact Dean Ken Galloway for inclusion on the distribution list at kenneth.f.galloway@vanderbilt.edu.
We earnestly seek your comments or questions regarding students, programs, or corporate interests. Feel free to contact Dean Ken Galloway's office, any of the above chairmen, or me at lizbobb@HIWAAY.net.
