Sam Wells, left, director of the American College of Surgeons, discusses
the impact of high technology on health care delivery during a panel
session of the Second Tennessee Conference on Biomedical Engineering
held on Vanderbilt campus last April. Others serving on the panel were
Vanderbilt faculty members Thomas R. Harris, chair of biomedical engineering;
Will Chapman, associate professor of surgery; and Harry Jacobson, vice-chancellor
for health affairs and professor of surgery. The conference attracted
more than 250 people from academia and industry to discuss mutual goals
for biomedical engineering in Tennessee. During the conference, the
Tennessee Biotechnology Association was formed to further develop the
industry in the state. Jerry Collins, BME research associate professor,
and Paul King, BME associate professor, were co-chairs of the conference.
