Dr. Kong Chen- Energy Balance Lab

The study centered on childhood obesity.  However, people of various ages, ethnic groups, and states of health were eligible for the study.

Different mobile devices were used to calculate energy expenditure in the subjects, as compared to the results collected in the calorimetry room. This was to try to determine the validity of data collected during energy expenditure in different environments.  I was able to use the actiheart, viasys, and sensewear device to collect data and compare it to the other subjects in the study.

As a result of the study, I am developing a module on Cardiovascular Health.  In this, my students will learn about the anatomy of the heart, blood flow, and the physiological basis of circulation and blood pressure.  They will also learn about the importance of maintaining cardiovascular health through the development of healthy life skills, such as proper diet and exercise.  They will also learn about the various types of heart disease, treatments, and ways to manage problems of the cardiovascular system.  The overall goal is for the student to maintain good health throughout life.
