Dr. Biswas: Teachable Agents Group

In the duration of this summer, I was privileged to work with Dr. Biswas' Teachable Agents Group lab.  I also shared this privileged experience with another RET participant, Wendy Holmgren. Throughout my experiences there, I learned that the lab's focus of study was to combine computer technology, psychology and education in a way that students become educators but more importantly, critical thinkers and doers.  With this knowledge, we were challenged to develop a computer simulation for use within our classroom settings.  In order to complete this process, we had to decide on a concept in which to develop our simulation around.  A computer program was developed in order to facilitate the learning of major concepts within the module.  It is the hope that as a result of utilizing this simulation, students will increase their knowledge base and analytical skills.

For my curricular module, the students will learn the effects of potential and kinetic energy on the movement of roller coasters.  They will accomplish this task by participating in web research based study as well as effecting controls in a simulated computer model.  At the culminating point of the module, the students will create physical models for tradeshow demonstration and hopefully, attend an amusement park to apply their newfound knowledge.
