This summer I assisted in researching the healing effect of HSP70 on wound healing.  We used transgenic mice which we treated with a diode laser and observed the effects of the treatment at various time points after the treatment.  During the treatment process, the temperature of the treatment area was monitored using an infrared camera.  After finding the optimal time for which HSP70 was present at the treatment areas, we would wound the mice using a scalpel incision.  We quantified the presence of HSP70 using the IVIS imaging system and tested the strength of the wounds with a tensiometer.

The research I conducted this summer will be transferred into my classroom by means of laser technologies.  The students will have the opportunity to learn basic light properties, laser types and their applications, as well as constructing systems that will incorporate laser technologies.
