Engineering recognizes exemplary faculty, staff
News Release Archives  Current | 2007 | 2006 | 2005

Vanderbilt School of Engineering Dean Kenneth F. Galloway presented three awards to faculty and staff members for their achievements in research, teaching and professional service during the 2007-08 academic year. The awards were given during a May 6 ceremony at Featheringill Hall.

Four faculty members attained emeritus status and were recognized by the Dean. They are Richard Schiavi, professor of biomedical engineering; Thomas Harris, Orrin Henry Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering; Paul King, professor of biomedical engineering; and Karl Schnelle Jr., professor of chemical and environmental engineering.

The Dean noted the honors and achievements of each of the four new emeritus faculty members, who also received a gift from the School.

The Edward J. White Engineering Faculty Award for Excellence in Service was presented to biomedical engineering professor Richard Schiavi.

Galloway cited Schiavi’s numerous contributions during his 36 years of service to the school. “Rich receives the White award for a particular contribution – that is his exemplary service as chair of the Engineering Curriculum Committee, one of the most important committees in the School,” Galloway said.

The School of Engineering Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented to Ronald Schrimpf, professor of electrical engineering and computer science.

“Ron is an outstanding teacher who has excelled in classroom instruction from the freshman year through the doctoral program,” Galloway said. The Dean noted that Schrimpf will begin his role this summer as Head of House in the Commons, a living and learning community for first-year students, faculty and staff, opening in fall 2008.

Stephen Wadley, academic counselor and credentials evaluator for the School, received the 2008 Judith A. Pachtman Endowed Staff Service Award for exceptional service to the faculty and staff.

“Steve works every day to help students navigate the waters of the Vanderbilt academic system. But, he does much more than that. Faculty advisers know how much he does to support their work.  His contributions exemplify the ‘exceptional service’ specified by the new Pachtman award,” Galloway said.

Also awarded during the end-of-year ceremony was the 2007 Best Student Research Paper, given to two engineering graduate students Anuradha Bulusu and Ashwath Jayagopal.
