Sanjiv Gokhale is ASCE Fellow: Sanjiv Gokhale, professor of the practice in civil engineering and director of the Construction Management Program, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. (more)

Four faculty members attain emeritus status: Four retiring engineering faculty members will be recognized during Vanderbilt's May 9 commencement ceremony when the university honors their years of service and bestows on them the title of emeritus faculty. (more)

Professor Sankaran Mahadevan, professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been elected to serve as General Chair of the 51st Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference jointly organized by AIAA, ASME and ASCE, in Orlando, Fla., in May 2010.

Clare McCabe, Associate professor of Chemical Engineering, was named a Fellow of the UK Royal Society of Chemistry in September 2007. Fellows of the RSC are selected by current members based on their professional achievements and contributions to the chemical sciences.

Edward L. Thackston, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Emeritus, was elected chairman of the Cumberland University Board of Trust.

Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Anita Mahadevan-Jansen has been invited to serve as a member of the Medical Imaging Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, of the National Institutes of Health. Study sections review grant applications and make recommendations to the NIH advisory council or board. Her term will begin July 1 and extend until June 30, 2011.

Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Sharon Weiss was elected to the Vanderbilt Graduate Faculty Council and Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering Cynthia Paschal has been elected to the Senate Faculty.

Peter T. Cummings, John R. Hall Professor of Chemical Engineering, began his two-year term as president of the board of trustees of CAChE Corporation in August, after serving a two-year term as vice president and chair-elect. CAChE is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to promote cooperation among universities, industry and government in the development and distribution of computer-related and/or technology-based educational aids for the chemical engineering profession.

E. Bronson Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering Janos Sztipanovits has been appointed to a four-year term on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. The AFSAB plays an important role in guiding U.S. Air Force research and development policy.

Professor of Computer Science Douglas C. Schmidt has been appointed to the Study Committee of the National Academies' Computer Science and Telecommunications Board project, "Advancing Software-Intensive Systems Producibility." The committee will assess national computer software research needs, focusing in particular on software production, testing, and maintenance schedules needed by the U.S. Department of Defense. The committee includes academic researchers, private industry software systems researchers, major software vendors, and systems integrators involved in development of complex software-intensive systems.

Benoit Dawant, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, was elected chair of the steering committee for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Medical Imaging.

Bridget Rogers, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, has been elected to the American Vacuum Society board of directors.
