James H. Clarke, Professor of the Practice of Civil & Environmental Engineering, participated as an invited presenter and panel member in a session of Waste Management  2007 on "Preserving Worldwide Nuclear Competency - Where Education, Institutional Knowledge and Industry Meet." His presentation was entitled "Education and the Nuclear Renaissance - What Have We Learned That Could Be Important This Time?" The symposium was held Feb. 25 - March 1 at the Tucson Convention Center.

Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering Clare McCabe guest edited special issues of the international journals Molecular Simulation and Molecular Physics. The issues published papers presented at theThird Foundations of Molecular Modeling and Simulation, a conference held July 9 - 14, 2006, in Blaine Wash., which she co-chaired with J.T. Golab of INEOS Technologies in Illinois.

Peter T. Cummings, John R. Hall Professor of Chemical Engineering, chaired the 2006 annual meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, held Nov. 12-17 in San Francisco. The 2006 meeting was the largest in AIChE history, with more than 700 sessions and 5000 papers presented.

Edsel Daniel, research assistant professor of civil engineering, presented two papers at the Urban and Region Information Systems Association Caribbean Geographic Information System Conference held in October in Nassau, Bahamas, Oct. 30 - Nov. 2. "Land Resource Analysis for the island of St. Kitts, West Indies," was co-written by Derek Byrant, research associate in civil engineering, James Dobbins, research assistant professor of civil engineering and Mark Abkowitz, professor of civil engineering. "Development and Implementation of a Coastal Resource Information System on the Island of Anguilla, West Indies," was co-written by Alan Mills, Alan Mills Consulting, Karim Hodge, Nicola Francis, Silvia Erni, (Government of Anguilla).

Professor of Biomedical Engineering Todd D. Giorgio delivered an invited talk Oct. 6 at the Indo-U.S. Symposium on Nanotechnology in Advanced Drug Delivery in Punjab, India. His talk, "Enzyme Conjugated Superparamagnetic Nanoscale Delivery Vehicles for Enhanced Tissue Biodistribution of Macromolecular Therapies," was part of a symposium sponsored by the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, which is an organization created by the Indian government to promote pharmaceutical education and research in the country.

Peter T. Cummings, John R. Hall Professor of Chemical Engineering, presented a plenary lecture on “Molecular Simulation and Modeling of Water and Aqueous Solutions in Bulk and at Interfaces: From Ambient to Supercritical Conditions,” at a joint Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers/Korean Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) workshop on Thermodynamics and Molecular Computation at Hanwha Resorts, Korea, in July, 2006. During the same trip, he also presented a talk on “Computational and Theoretical Nanoscience: Methods and Applications,” at the Supercomputing Center, KISTI, in Daejeon, Korea.

Clare McCabe, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, co-chaired the third international meeting on the foundations of molecular modeling and simulation held July 9-14 at Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, Wash. The conference, "Molecular Modeling and Simulation: Tools for Innovation,"  brings together the molecular modeling community and emphasizes integration from the most fundamental level (electronic structure) through atomistic to meso- and macro-scale modeling.

Kenneth F. Galloway, Dean of the School of Engineering, chaired the 2006 Engineering Deans Council Public Policy Colloquium, held in February in Washington, D.C.

T. John Koo, assistant professor of computer engineering, co-chaired the Workshop on Hybrid and Embedded Systems: Technologies and Applications, held Feb. 21 - 22 in Hong Kong. The workshop was organized by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the Department of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Koo and Vanderbilt colleagues Gabor Karsai, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer engineering, and Janos Sztipanovits, E. Bronson Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering gave, invited lectures to the workshop. The workshop covered issues involved in the modeling, analysis and design of high-profile and safety-critical computing systems, such as medical devices, manufacturing systems, power networks, automobiles, aircraft and transportation systems.
